Simple Leg Ornament Garter - A wedding garter has been considered one of the staple accessories in weddings for several centuries. Although the modern wedding is not complete without it, the use and significance have slowly changed over time.
For people who know someone close that is getting married, the bridal garter is an accessory which should not be left out. Some may even believe that a bride should not walk down the aisle without this simple leg ornament.
The modern garter custom actually goes all the way back to 14 Century Europe. There have always been numerous superstitions surrounding brides and weddings, one of which was that it was lucky to have a piece of her wedding clothing.
That sounds pleasant enough, until one realizes that the way wedding guests got a piece of bridal fabric was to tear it off her gown.
Resourceful brides preserved their bridal gowns by voluntarily tossing articles of clothing to their guests rather than waiting for the guests to come and start tearing at their precious dresses.
The garter was one of the things that many brides starting throwing to their guests, and thus a tradition was born.
There is another old English tradition about “flinging the stocking.” Guests would invade the bridal chamber to steal the bride’s wedding garter. Afterwards, they would throw it in the air, targeting the groom’s nose. The first who would make it land is said to be the next to marry.
Most brides today choose to have two garters. One is for tossing and the other is for the wedding night, as well as to keep as part of her bridal trousseau.
Generally the tossing garter is more simple, while a bride might want to splurge on a fancier garter to keep.
It is not uncommon for a bride to add some crystals or pearls to her garter to complement her bridal jewelry, to choose a garter made from fine lace, or even to pick a garter which really shows her personality.
The garter is also an easy place for the bride to get her lucky “something blue”. The garter itself could be made from blue ribbon, it could be traditional white with a small blue bow, or if the bride is wearing crystal bridal jewelry, she might have a cluster of blue crystals added to a plain white garter.
